The
Evolution of the Duck-Decoys
Everyone
who’s watched TV has
seen hunting party paintings on the walls of ancient cave dweller and
Egyptian
pyramids. But only speculation says they actually used duck
decoys to
hunt ducks.
From
my experience, they provably didn’t need a decoy to catch a duck back
then. Not all birds and animals were afraid of
humans. My daughter
picked up a very large injured Greater Red Tailed Hawk and then
examined it
with her bare hands a couple of years back, while five of us watched in
fear. Birds aren't naturally afraid of people. They have to learn it. Ducks generally come to people when they are offered food. Two thousand years ago people’s survival depended on their ability to observe. I’m sure they saw ducks clean up the crumbs where they had been eating. Plus, they would have gone to the parts of the lake or river where the duck tended to frequent, and easily caught the ducks there. It
would only be after the humans hunted the same area
frequently, over several years, that the birds would remember
and a decoy might help bring them back. |

Before
the duck decoys, it is likely that the Indians tried to attract
ducks with duck calls. Movies always portray Indian using
animal calls at
one point or another. The
sound of one
bird could ease the mind of a passing bird enough to entice him to
land. People took more time to listen to nature 1,000 to 2,000 years ago, thus learning that each species has it’s own unique language. They used their hands, tongue, sticks, reeds, and any thing they could find to help them make the sounds they heard. It became quite the competition for people to sound like animal. Even today, almost every state in the USA has competition some time each year for callers. Our Duck Calling Page will tell you a list of animals there are callers for; where to get or how to make caller tools, and the published competitions. |

| The artifacts
found in Northern America depict a duck decoy in a
large cage type trap, insinuating that the decoy was being used to lure
a predator.
Since the duck decoys were hanging around for
hunting anyway, it seems likely
that they must have tried to attract ducks with them too. Or they may have left some
in the shallow
water to clean them after a hunt, and a bird or two showed
up. Either
way, the combination of duck calling with duck decoys must have worked
back
then because it works pretty well now. |

The
complexity of the duck decoy became
more and more important as the ducks became more aware of mans luring
presents. Everyone
agrees Cattails or some kind of
water grass was the first material used for duck-decoys by the North
American
Indians. However, everything and anything has been tried
since
then. Wood or cork or a combination there of, allowed the
craftsmen to carve
very intricate details like feathers and provide nice
floatability. Glass
eyes gave the decoy a very real look. While those who could
painter could
be happy with a duck cut out of metal that demonstrated every little
color that
made the species unique. The decoys for hunting needed to be light for transport and durable because they got knocked around a lot by the equipment they were thrown in with. Decoys took on movement, with wings flapping and heads moving. They even have remote control ducks that swim around now. Some of these look so real, you need to be careful they don’t get shot out of the water by other hunters. There are fold up duck-decoy that will fit in a pocket. |

List
the other decoy animals here![]() ![]() |
You may want to use this same list if you are looking for great bird or animal decoys just to get a feel for the options, no matter what your particular use is. You could shoot pictures of the ducks on the water using decoys too. This might not work for the same way with the decoy deer, moose or other animals. But you could have fun trying.
| Duck Decoys in Motion Some States have even outlawed these as unsportsman like. Be careful they don’t get shot at by other hunters. Duck Decoy Museums So |
You can find ducks and other animals made of glass, metal, wood, foam, reed, plastic and anything else that was handy. Some of the animals were not meant to float and many were not mean to accompany the hunter. You would have quite a trip checking all of the duck decoy museums for what materials were used in which regions of the country. When a young boy or girl carved their first bird and they had not remembered to pick the right wood, the result might be useless as a decoy but make a beautifully sculpture that a parent would be proud of and might even treasure. |

Decoy
Auctions A Red Breasted Mergansero sold for $856,000 |
It was natural that people made decoys and sculptures of the other birds in their neck of the woods. We see beautiful specimens of water fowl and land fowl as well. These are such fine pieces that the costs have driven the classification of hobbyist to collector. “The World Record price for an antique duck decoy at auction…” is the “…Red Breasted Merganser Hen by Lothrop Holmes for $856,000,” sold at auction at “Guyette & Schmidt and Christie's New York. January 2007.”[1] There are two more decoys that sold for over $800,000 at the same auction house. | Cameras & Such
| What are All of the
Decoys available? Birds:Ducks ![]() |
When viewing
the pictures of the ‘decoys’ up for auction and sold one of the
important
factors to notice is that not all of these items were meant to be
decoys for
hunting. Many were quite obviously
meant to be art/decorations for someone or just because the artist
loved the
bird. No one eats a Sand Piper or a Red
Robin. The Blue Heron statues could
have been used in a garden to keep ground squirrels and or snakes away.
The songbirds might have been just a reminder
of the joy of spring when the birds were out.
Fox and Gator Heads decoys are made today and sold to golf courses to
keep away birds and rabbits. Snake
decoys work well to keep small birds away.
Big Spiders scare wood peckers away from your house. Barn Owl
decoys have work quite well to
deter small birds in many peoples yards. |

Today,
you can find sculptures and/or decoys of
almost any animal, incorporated in to the landscaping of just about any
ones
yard. Industrial
area, Amusement parks,
Japanese gardens and little old lady gardens are just a few places you
may find
decoys. This market
is partially
responsible for the variety of less expensive decoys available to
hunters. The
plastic Pink Flamingo lawn ornaments
that used to frequent the Florida residence’s lawns were the best
demonstration
of that.

Where can they be used? THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS AND PLACES DECOYS CAN BE USED, IT IS LIMITED ONLY BY YOUR IMAGINATION. EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE FIRST USED BY HUNTERS TO HELP THEM PROVIDE FOOD FOR THEIR FAMILIES, BY FAR THE DECORATIVE AND ORNAMENTAL USES ARE FAR MORE NUMEROUS. THEY HAVE BECOME SO POPULAR THAR WE TAKE THEM FOR GRANTED, BUT STILL HAVE TIE TO ADMIRE THEM WHEN WE SEE THEM. JUST PLACING A FEW IN A ROOM CAN WARM UP THE AMBIANCE AND MAKE YOU FEEL AT HOME. USING DECOYS OUTSIDE WITH YOUR LANDSCAPING CAN CHANGE AN AREA INTO A FOCAL POINT OF INTEREST. DECOYS ALSO SEEM TO MAKE YOUR PLACE OF WORK OR YOUR OFFICE MORE INVITING, BY SAYING WELCOME. |

Why
are duck-decoys so popular?
duck decoys are a perennial favorite for many reasons.
somehow they hit
a nerve with us that makes them hard to resist. Not only they
are
beautiful to look at, but they somehow gives us a warm homey feeling.
most of
us have never been duck hunting or used these for this purpose, but
still love
to have them displayed in our homes and at work. There
are so many varieties that they will go anywhere or with
almost all types of décor.
